Phillip Retuta: Thesis // Synthesis



Born and raised in the Chicagoland area, Phillip Nievera Retuta went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and graduated in 2007 with a BA in English Literature. At his time at UIUC, he wrote and drew the popular comic strip, "Sausage-Fest," for the student newspaper, and now he continues to draw under its new title, "Ghost Potato." As a cartoonist, he has published two graphic novels. In 2009, he moved to New York to get his MFA at Parsons The New School For Design in the Design + Technology program.

His major skills include: illustration, graphic design, photography, motion graphics, animation, front-end web development, and writing. Well-versed in both traditional and digital media, he has produced work for The Onion, Renegade Craft Fair, Continental, Nickelodeon, The Discovery Channel, Budweiser, Men's Health, The New School, Louis Vuitton-Moet Hennessy, National Geographic, and small, private clients.

He is currently living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He has a Husky-Labrador named Nico (after the Warhol model/Velvet Underground singer), and he enjoys black, iced coffee (with two Splendas).
